What Is a Career Development Plan?

A career development plan is a document that outlines your goals and objectives for the next several years of your life, including what you want to do with your education, training, or work experience after graduation. It also includes information about how you will achieve those goals.

How to Create a Career Development Plan

Career planning can be an intimidating process, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are some tips on how to start creating your own career development plan:

1. Start early. The earlier you begin thinking about your future, the more time you have to make changes in your plans. If you wait until the last minute, you may find yourself scrambling to figure out what to do after college.

2. Know where you want to go. You need to know exactly what you want to do when you graduate from school. This is especially important if you don’t already have a job lined up before you leave campus.

3. Figure out what skills you need to get there. Think about what kind of jobs you would like to pursue and then determine which skills you than once.

4. Determine what type of degree you should earn. There are many different types of degrees available today, so think carefully about what you want to study.

5. Find out what resources are available to help you succeed. Colleges often provide services such as tutoring, counseling, and academic advising to help students reach their educational goals.

6. Take advantage of opportunities to learn new things. Whether it’s through internships, volunteering, or simply taking classes at local community colleges, you can gain valuable knowledge and skills that can help you prepare for your career.

7. Don’t forget to set aside time each week to reflect on your progress. By regularly reviewing your goals and accomplishments, you can stay focused on your long-term goals.

8. Stay organized. A good way to keep track of your goals is by using a notebook or planner. Include sections for notes, appointments, deadlines, and anything else that might come up during your planning process.

9. Keep your plan updated. As you move forward with your career development plan, update your goals and objectives as needed.

Finding support for your career development

If you’re having trouble deciding what path to take, consider talking to someone who has been down the same road before. Your guidance counsellor or career advisor can give you advice based on their experiences. They can also point you towards programs and organizations that can help you develop your skills and explore potential careers.

You may also want to talk to people who share similar interests to yours. For example, if you enjoy working with computers, you could ask friends and family members if they know anyone who works in computer technology. Or, if you love sports, you could contact coaches and athletic directors at your high school or university to see if they know of any positions open in your field.

You will probably find that most people are willing to help you if you just ask them!
